Afrolicious feat Nappy Riddem (SF Funk FEst)

November 17, 2011 @ 9:00 pm PST

Afrolicious is a weekly party at Elbo Room in San Francisco devoted to exploring the many sides of funk and afro-centric music.Rex Riddem is a Washington DC based DJ, producer, and percussionist known for his ability to traverse local and time through his eclectic tastes in music. Rex started DJing in the electronic dance scene. With over 15 years experience in the industry, Rex has played clubs and concert halls throughout the U.S. as well as across the globe. He has spread his mix of classic mash-ups, ragga breaks, latin funk, and electro to Brasil, Russia, Portugal, Hawaii, St. John, Mexico, and across the continental U.S. including Las Vegas where he held an eight month residency at Mandalay Bay. http://www.myspace.com/rexriddem Mustafa Akbar a.k.a Mustabar is known for his flavorful marriage of City Slicker with Country Charm that affords him his distinct sound. He’s from Philly but also spent his summers in the woods of Virginia, where Mustabar hosts Mustock, a two-day music party featuring his fellow friends in the industry on his familiy’s ancestral land. This complex background has made it difficult to place this unique artist in a neat box, or categorize him under one genre. His sound; an exotic, soulful blend of sophisticated edgy rock, mixed with hip-hop flavored funk, allows an effortlessly flow between the many musical projects he is a part of: electro funk band, Fort Knox Five (Fort Knox Record- ings), reggae soul collaboration: Nappy Riddem (Fort Knox Recordings) and Thunderball (ESL Music) – whose song, The Heart of the Hustler, was recently featured on the hit Fox television show, Lie To Me. Mustabar has hosted Mustock, a two-day music party featuring his fellow friends in the industry. Currently Rex Riddem and Mustabar are recording the upcoming album for Nappy Riddem, a ragga-psychedelic soul funk project comprised of the two Rastars, and Thievery Corporation and Gogogo Airhart Bassist Ashish ‘Hash’ Vyas. The three draw from their comon love of everything diasporic, creating a unique sound that blends the sultry soul of Akbars voice, Hash’s dubby basslines, and Rex’s funky beats with latin percussion. Their recent releases, deemed ‘groovy’ and ‘awesome’by Steve Aoki, are featured on Fort Knox Recordings ‘The New Gold Standard 2’ compilation featuring guest appearances by Asheru, of the Unspoken Heard and Boondocks theme song, as well as guitarist Rob “International Velvet” Myers, who also plays with Thievery Corporation, See-I and Fort Knox Five. The Riddem Method sound has even traveled as far as Budapest, recieving regular airplay on Hungary’s FM 90.3. http://www.facebook.com/NappyRiddem For other info and music streams from Rex Riddem and Nappy Riddem, please check the following links: www.nappyriddem.com www.mustafaakbar.com/ www.fortknoxmusic.com www.soundcloud.com/rexriddemMoPo is a master craftsman and his building material is the world’s most precious commodity: TIME. Consider yourself fortunate If you get a chance catch a Motion Potion DJ set these days. An enormous amount of thought, planning, and scheming has to occur to make them happen. MoPo approaches his shows like a college professor, or a football coach, putting hours of preparation and thought into exactly who will be listening, and how exactly to reach into their souls. Every set is different, and each can unfold in hundreds of different ways, and this intense focus on preparation makes him so versatile, so intense, and so much damn fun. These are “DJ sets” in the classic sense, unfolding like poems with every song a word and every mix or drop a bit of punctuation. Once known as the “DJ for people who hate DJ’s” it would be more accurate to say that this is the DJ for those who love live music.
