Silent Frisco at Treasure Island Music Festival sponsored by SONY

October 15, 2011 @ 12:00 am PDT

Silent Frisco is a crew of San Francisco sonic missionaries dedicated to turning impossible situations into musical magic. We specialize in enabling performances in public spaces where ‘noise’ has previously made such performances impractical or illegal. By using our custom ‘Silent Frisco’ wireless headphones, the music can play while neighbors enjoy peace and quiet. Once one removes “noise” from the equation, public music gatherings can be seen for what they truly are : an unalienable civil right.

We are based in San Francisco but have traveled far and wide to bring this unique performance technology to happy listeners. Among the events that either Silent Frisco, or our founder Robbie ‘MoPo’ Kowal have performed at are Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Treasure Island Music Festival, Camp Bisco, Earthdance, Harmony Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, Sea of Dreams NYE, and Ghost Ship Halloween. We’ve put music on Ocean Beach in San Francisco, Miami Beach in Florida, and Town Beach in Bridgeport Connecticut. We helped to Revive legendary outdoor artspaces the Silo in Houston and Austin Enchanted Forest. In 2010, Silent Frisco conceieved and executed the ‘Silent Soundclash Tour’ the nation’s first Silent Disco club tour. Show us a place where “music Is not allowed” and we will show you how to get make it happen.MoPo is a master craftsman and his building material is the world’s most precious commodity: TIME. Consider yourself fortunate If you get a chance catch a Motion Potion DJ set these days. An enormous amount of thought, planning, and scheming has to occur to make them happen. MoPo approaches his shows like a college professor, or a football coach, putting hours of preparation and thought into exactly who will be listening, and how exactly to reach into their souls. Every set is different, and each can unfold in hundreds of different ways, and this intense focus on preparation makes him so versatile, so intense, and so much damn fun. These are “DJ sets” in the classic sense, unfolding like poems with every song a word and every mix or drop a bit of punctuation. Once known as the “DJ for people who hate DJ’s” it would be more accurate to say that this is the DJ for those who love live music.Jason Apple, aka Ground Control, is a San Francisco based bass music producer and DJ. His interests run the gamut from electrohouse to glitch hop, with stops on the way at dubstep, funky, breakbeat, and bassline. He has released music on such labels as En:vision Recordings, Play Me Records, and Sleevin. As a DJ, he has played at some of the Bay Area’s biggest parties, including Icebreakers Ball, Ghostship, and Breakfast of Champions. His monthly residency, TRBL, happens 2nd Fridays at Anu.As long time North SF Bay native event producer and DJ, Zack Darling is well known as a highly effective mover and shaker. His DJ career spans over 20 years and began as a 14 year electro-punk DJ playing late night sessions on public and pirate radio stations in Mendo-fornia. He’s since dropped multi-genre-smackdown beats on night clubs and parties large and small, including Decadance, Space Cowboy’s Unimog, Mystic Beat Lounge’s Techno-Tribal Dance, as well as some of the biggest clubs and dance events in San Francisco, like 1015 Folsom, Temple, Sea of Dreams and Kelly’s Mission Rock and many more. He also regularly plays within the festival circuit, including Burning Man, Burning Man Decompression Street Fair and Harmony Festival. Zack has played every year as a headliner at EarthDance Festival for a decade now, and in 2002 was the first electronic dance music DJ to play the main stage at Reggae on the River where he shocked the Humboldt rasta crowd with nu-skool ragga breaks.

Musically Zack’s style is most difficult to classify as it spans a gamut broader than most dance floor DJs. His mixes are expressions of the alignment between Mashups and bass-heavy dance floor beats. Zack is moving forward into a style where he can follow all of his passions, old and new, merging Breakbeats, House, Dubstep and Mid-Tempo Hip Hop, with Reggae, New Wave, Folk, Funk, Soul and especially classic Rock favorites – remixed, retooled, repurposed for the dance floor. The emerging name for this unique musical flavor of bass-heavy dance floor bootlegs? Mashstep. Recently Zack launched the popular new website www.mashstep.com where fans of this sound explosion can saturate their spirits in bass-heavy dancefloor mashup wompers.

Zack continues to feed the flames of the music community through his event production efforts. He is the lead producer of the Mystic Beat Lounge Techno-Tribal Dance, Associate Producer of Harmony Festival, North Bay Burning Man Regional Contact and co-founder of the cult-following nightclub event, Decadance. He produces many of the graphic art, posters and websites for the Northern California concert and festival industry via his Santa Rosa based company, Zack Darling Creative Associates which also serves as a central point for his event production endeavors.Don’t you just love dancing? This man’s resume speaks for itself, but don’t just take these words’s word for it, go check the schedule and get out to a show. Make sure you bring dancing shoes.DJ DIALS aka Noah Bennet Cunningham has been djing for over 14 years. He’s done pretty much every aspect of DJING from playing in weird other countries to celebrity weddings, barmitzvahs, and clubs of all different shapes and sizes. He plays appropriate music for any occasion, meaning he is not too proud to play some tear out dubstep, throwback electro, or some 90’s rap shit. His personal music tastes do shine and he prides himself as being a tastemaker- so expect the best- no shitty music from this guy.

Dials has been writing and producing music for years, his first 12′ record was released on Brownswood Electr*c Volume 2- Giles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. He has hundreds of beats that will never see the light of day, mostly downtempo and the occasionally syrup dripped rap jawn. Based in San Francisco, Dials curates tastemaker shows in many clubs across town. He tries to challenge the audience and has a fun time doing it… as he puts it, ‘I want to do memorable parties with good music’.DJ M3 aka Manny is a major influence in SF’s music scene. Launching the Green Gorilla Lounge DJ crew and record label in the 90s, which organized and played many of SF’s most notable underground events. In San Francisco nightlife, Zach is known for three distinct styles of dance music: party-rockin UK & Florida breaks, funky nu-school house and soothing, atmospheric house which he plays under the alias, W.Haze. Zach is also known as the creator and host of The Armory Podcast and for his work on The RIPEcast, the Space Cowboys’ Breakspoll-nominated, electronic music podcast.Anthony Mansfield has been on a 20-year journey through the world of psychedelic dance music ever since attending the now-legendary full moon massives of San Francisco’ s Wicked Crew in the early 90’ s. Anthony spent the rest of the decade in New York, spreading the gospel of deep house across the Empire State with a late- night radio show, his 8-year-running weekly, and the countless underground parties that gave birth to his own crew, HectorWorks Soundsystem. After an exhausting and debaucherous 2-year run as GM, talent booker, and resident DJ at upstate’ s largest live music venue, The Odyssey, Anthony was ready to return to San Francisco.

Anthony hit the West Coast running in 2001, joining his old friend DJ M3 as resident DJ and co-promoter of the infamous Green Gorilla Lounge in a string of successful weekly club nights, true seat-of-your-pants underground parties, and blown- out monthly events across the Bay Area, with some of the city’ s and world’ s best names in dance music. Anthony has left his mark on Burning Man for the last decade as well, at the Space Lounge, Green Gorilla, and Disco Knights sound camps, with a trail of exhausted dancers and party people in the wake of his many epic sets on the Playa.Well known for serving up a crossbreed of indy dance, swampy bass and banging beats, Tom Hamilton, aka DJ Morale, hasn’t stopped moving packed dance floors since he first emerged on the scene in 2007. Whether you catch his set at a large venue, inside a dark warehouse, at a packed bar or at a major festival, his beats guarantee that standing still is out of the question. Morale’s ability to engage a wide variety of music lovers with his diverse, intriguing, and completely nasty performances has left a trail of nothing but crushed dance floors and sweaty ravers behind him. Fortunately, with residencies in both San Francisco and New York, his momentum doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon
