Storm Warning! A Louisiana thunderhead of Cat-5 brass band funk, jazz, hip hop & boogie is headed to the Bay Area with Grammy winning REBIRTH BRASS BAND playing three huge shows! The world heavyweight champions of brass band music will rock The Independent on San Francisco on Friday December 2. Then on Saturday, December 3, they head to Oakland for two shows at the Starline Social Club for an All Ages Matinee followed by a Night-Owl blowout.

Founded in 1983, Rebirth has thrilled audiences the world over by ‘brasstardizing’ soul, hip hop, pop, latin, and funk music into their own explosive horn-drums concoction. Featuring a blend of founding members and New Orleans ringers, no other brass band has ever combined the creativity, energy, and consistency of this crack crew.

Openers for this run include Bay Area funk outfit OBJECT HEAVY and seminal funk-remix producer MOTION POTION for the Friday Dec 2 Independent show plus KCSM’s renowned DJ HARRY DUNCAN on the Saturday matinee and the dirty south vibes of DJ MANCUB on the nightcap.

Rebirth’s Bay Area appearances typically sell out so we recommend you purchase advance at HUSHconcerts.com

REBIRTH BRASS BAND

“just saw THE REBIRTH BRASS BAND, unbelievable. hard as hell, free as a ray of light, there is not a band on earth that is better. stunning.” – Flea, Red Hot Chili Peppers

For almost 4 decades, the Grammy winning Rebirth Brass Band has been “stunning” fans with a fiery live show and a rich musical catalog. Their trademark sound pays homage to the New Orleans brass band tradition while weaving a tapestry that combines elements of jazz, funk, soul, R&B and the sounds from the streets they grew up on. From their legendary 25+ year run of Tuesday nights at the Maple Leaf to stages all over the world, Rebirth is the soundtrack of the Crescent City and her premier musical ambassador.

Founded by brothers Phil and Keith Frazier over 35 years ago, Rebirth began their career playing on the sidewalks of the French Quarter, and quickly landed gigs at second line parades. Those auspicious beginnings have led to thousands of shows to music aficionados everywhere, including heads of state and royalty.

The bands unique “soundtrack of New Orleans” has also garnered admiration from artists of all genres. They’ve shared the stage and collaborated with everyone from the Grateful Dead to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Maceo Parker, Green Day, U2, James Brown, 311, G-Love, MuteMath, Juvenile, Train, Big Freedia, Ani Difranco, Galactic, Allen Touisant, Neville Brothers, Quincy Jones and Trombone Shorty.

MOTION POTION

MoPo is a master craftsman and his building material is the world’s most precious commodity: time. Consider yourself fortunate if you catch a Motion Potion DJ set since an enormous amount of scheming has to occur to manifest them. He approaches performances like a sound scientist, researching specifically who will be listening, and how exactly to reach into their souls. Every set is different, each unfolds in a myriad of different ways, and his intensive approach to preparation makes him versatile, deep, and so much damn fun. These are “DJ sets” in the classic sense, unfolding like poems with every song a word and every drop a bit of punctuation. He’s been called the “DJ for people who hate DJ’s”, ‘The Godfather of Silent Disco’ and the creator of ‘Electric Nostalgia’ but we prefer that you just call him, and ask him to create something wonderful.

Since falling into his craft at a Greek nightclub in 1997, his adventurousness, (and the zero fucks he gives for prevailing paradigms) have led him into unheard-of DJ territory. Like a 54-song southern rock set for Govt Mule’s “Deepest End’. Or the three custom metal remix sets he created to follow Metallica at their XXX Anniversary. Or the countless festival lineups he has geeked into including every Electric Forest, every Bottlerock and a ten-year residency at Bonnaroo. In his many years at Outside Lands he has done sets built around the music of Radiohead, Metallica, Santana, 1969 in Remix, Michael & Janet, Soul in Remix, the list goes on and on. This is a polymath DJ who defies anyone to classify his style or reign in his taste.

With that said, this isn’t some old man railing at ‘the kids these days’. Rather, he serves as a living bridge between a hundred years of pop music we love, and four decades of modern dance music that pushes a dancefloor. He’s crafted more than 150 remixes, edits, and mixtapes, and records virtually every show he plays. Most of these only see the light of day in his live performances, but occasionally, he’ll find a cause worthy of sharing them. In 2016, he released Subterranean Homemade Alchemy, an extended album of Radiohead remixes aimed at drawing eyeballs to the social issues championed by the band. Or when a hardcore fan, or friend is in need of some musical inspiration, he’ll hunker down and find them something perfect from the archives, or make them something fresh. Reach out with an impossible challenge, that friend could be you.

DJ HARRY DUNCAN

Harry Duncan, longtime Bay Area-based producer of black music concerts also
produces and hosts In The Soul Kitchen, the award-winning, weekly Roots & Rhythm
radio show broadcast live on KCSM, the Bay Area’s jazz station.

Respected industry wide as an innovator, Duncan serves up his own freestyle Roots &
Rhythm music mix: a rich, danceable musical stew of soul, funk, blues, roots reggae,
ska and jazz plus African, Latin and select World music when spinning live and while In

The music mix gives audiences, artists and promoters a welcome alternative to the kinds
of in-house music usually played at festivals and concerts.
